  • Workshop on Transdisciplinary Research and Capacity Building
    A national workshop on Transdisciplinary Research and Capacity Building was organized on 17th March 2018, at NCCS Seminar Hall, SPPU. The workshop was attended by postgraduate teachers, PhD guides and researchers of AYUSH sector. The objectives of the workshop were strengthening interdisciplinary research and development of collaborative research network and improving quality of postgraduate and doctoral research. The workshop had following sessions:
    • Case studies of Transdisciplinary Research and Capacity Building: Speakers from different backgrounds shared their experiences in Ayurveda related transdisciplinary research. Dr Arvind Chopra (Center for Rheumatic Diseases, Pune), Dr Kalpana Joshi (Sinhagad College of Engineering, Pune), Dr Supriya Bhalerao (Interactive Research School for Health Affairs, Pune) and Mr Neelay Mehendale (IISER, Pune) interacted with the participants.
    • Group interactions: The participants were divided into five groups for interactive sessions with resource persons. The purpose of this exercise was discussion of research ideas and understanding the need for transdisciplinary approaches.
    • Panel Discussion: The members of Scientific Advisory Committee (AYUSH CoE) interacted with the participants and discussed diverse topics including schemes of Ministry of AYUSH, research culture and opportunities for AYUSH research.

  • National Workshop on ‘Publication Ethics and Scientific Writing’
    The workshop was jointly organized by the AYUSH CoE and CCIH from 5th-7th July 2018 at the Shivaji Hall, Main Building, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). The workshop aimed at creating awareness about publication ethics, predatory journals and research integrity. It provided the participants with an opportunity to learn and interact with eminent international scientists and editors known for their contributions in scientific publication. The workshop was mainly organized for postgraduate faculty and researchers from biomedicine, health sciences and AYUSH systems and was limited to 40 participants. The selected participants were provided with a Workshop pack consisting of various articles, websites, presentations, book chapters and flyers. Pre- and post-Workshop assessments were also carried out. Various important topics were covered during the three-day workshop viz., publication ethics and research integrity; plagiarism, fabrication and falsification; identification of predatory journals, selection of journals; manuscript preparation and submission; dealing with statistics and data presentation; WAME, COPE, ICMJE and EQUATOR initiatives; scientometrics; indexing services and journal database; clinical registries. The participants were oriented to the national and international publication scenario. They were also introduced the entire publication process. Many hand-on sessions were also conducted wherein the participants studied and discussed case studies from COPE and assessed quality of journals. The participants were requested to submit a write-up and a one-on-one session was also conducted wherein the resource persons guided the participants on the same. The participants were sensitized to important topics such as ethics, regulations and research integrity.

  • NABL Awareness Workshop
    An awareness workshop on ISO/IEC17025:2017 for faculty and staff involved in the process of accreditation was jointly organised by AYUSH CoE, CIF and Interdisciplinary School (IDS), SPPU on 19th January, 2019. Mr. S. A. Kukade, former Director, ETDC and CETE, Pune who is an experienced Lead Auditor for ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 17025 Lab Accreditation system was the main resource person for this programme. He was supported by Mr. Sagar Patil, Head of Chemistry Dept, Ross Lifesciences Pvt. Ltd Pune who gave the industry perspective. Twenty-five selected participants from various parts of Maharashtra like Nashik, Pune and Wagholi attended the programme.

  • Mainstreaming AYUSH in Public Health
    The National Health Policy (NHP) 2017 has emphasized on mainstreaming the potential of AYUSH systems. The AYUSH CoE has collaborated with Government of Maharashtra for training of AYUSH medical officers who are working in public health systems. The workshop ‘Mainstreaming AYUSH in Public Health’ marked the occasion of Indian Anthropological Congress organized by with Indian Anthropology Congress, and Society for Indian Medical Anthropology. The workshop was aimed at sharing and translating the best practices of AYUSH in public health systems. The workshop included sessions focusing on implementation of AYUSH concepts for addressing public health challenges. The workshop was attended by 50 medical officers from almost all the districts of Maharashtra State. The topics included AYUSH and NCDs, Epidemiology for Clinicians, Writing Case Reports and Case Series. The workshop also included experience sharing from the traditional healers, who were felicitated for their services provided in tribal areas. The Center felicitated Dr Sudam Kate, who was recently awarded ‘Padma Shree’ for his work in sickle cell anemia. Dr Kate talked about Ayurveda intervention for sickle cell management, which was an inspiring story of his research and dedicated service in tribal areas of north Maharashtra.

  • Analytical Techniques for AYUSH Researchers
    A capacity building workshop was organized for AYUSH researchers. The workshop was focused on analytical techniques used in AYUSH drug discovery and development, and regulatory aspects for the same. The workshop received an overwhelming response from all over India. The participants were from various seven states of India. The three days’ workshop covered the fundamentals of chromatographic techniques including Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), TLC Bioautography, High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC), and various Mass Spectrometry (MS) based Hyphenated technologies (e.g. HPTLC-MS/MS, HPTLC-NMR, LCMS, LC/MS/MS, LC-NMR, etc). The speakers were from National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune; Anchrom Pvt Ltd, Mumbai; Serum Institute of India, Pune; Agharkar Research Institute, Pune and Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune.

    Highlights of Workshop: Hands on chromatography was experienced by the participants using botanical extract. They were also exposed to the trouble shooting related to chromatography explained to them from solvent system preparation to TLC derivitization. Overview of accreditation process such as NABL and GLP was discussed in the context of lab requirements. Detailed information about therapeutic adjuvants/herbal drugs standardization, awareness about current regulatory requirements was given to participants. Many techniques like TLC, HPTLC, HPLC, GC, Confocal microscopy, XRD, NMR, and Mass Spectrometry with their hyphenated applications were covered in the workshop. The sessions were useful for AYUSH concepts-based drug discovery and development.

  • Workshop on ‘Meta-Research and Systematic Reviews'
    AYUSH CoE had organized a workshop on ‘Meta-Research and Systematic Reviews' on 28th June 2019 at Interdisciplinary School of Life Sciences, Savitribai Phule Pune University Pune. The workshop was primarily important for postgraduate faculty and researchers from biomedicine, health sciences and AYUSH systems. Thirty-five individuals attended the workshop along with AYUSH CoE team. Dr Rahul Mhaskar conducted this workshop. Dr Mhaskar is the Director, College of Medicine Office of Research and an Associate Professor of comparative effectiveness research and evidence-based medicine at Department of Internal Medicine, at the University of South Florida, USA. He investigated numerous state and nationally funded research projects. He led the investigation of the methodological quality of clinical trials conducted by the National Cancer Institute’s co-operative groups. He has received the prestigious ‘Thomas C Chalmers Award’ in 2011 in the field of evidence-based medicine from the Cochrane Collaboration. The workshop covered reporting guidelines along with hands-on activity on appraisal of methodological quality, risk of bias in published papers, and extraction of information from clinical trials using data extraction form. Participants were taught to conduct PICO – analysis of a research topic on which they would like to conduct a systematic review. PICO analysis can be explained briefly as defining the population/problem/patient, intervention, control and outcome of research topic. The participants were explained the process of meta-research and development of a systematic review.

  • National Workshop on ‘Recent Trends in Yoga Research’
    The Ramkumar Rathi Patanjali Yoga Chair (established in October 2018) and AYUSH CoE, Savitribai Phule Pune University organised a workshop ‘Recent Trends in Yoga Research’ to commemorate fifth International Yoga Day. One of the purposes of the Chair and AYUSH CoE is to promote scholarship, scientific research, meta-research, education and practice of Yoga. The workshop aimed at capacity building and networking of Yoga researchers and practitioners and focused on recent trends in Yoga research and opportunities for future prospect. It was organised on Friday and Saturday, 5th – 6th July 2019 at Shivaji hall, Main Building Savitribai Phule Pune University. The sessions included interaction with renowned scientists, practical sessions on Yoga based techniques and group activities on research skills.

    The participants got the opportunity to interact with eminent speakers in the field of yoga research. The workshop covered recent updates and trends in the yoga research, meditation, stress management; case studies; literature survey, documentation, formulating research question / statement along with hands-on activities. The Workshop was mainly organized for postgraduate faculty, practitioners and researchers from yoga, health sciences and AYUSH systems, and was limited to 40 participants. The applicants were selected on the basis of their SOPs and academic credentials. The selected participants were provided with a Workshop pack consisting of various articles, websites, presentations, book chapters and flyers. Pre- and post-workshop assessments were also carried out.

  • National Workshop on 'In-silico pharmacological approaches for AYUSH Research'
    Natural products have immense potential for drug discovery because of their rich phytochemistry. The understanding of the complex interactions between a plethora of chemical moieties and a number of biological targets need computational methods. In silico pharmacological methods have facilitated the understanding of drug and disease targets and helped to speed up the drug discovery and development process. AYUSH systems have a lot to offer for addressing healthcare challenges. In-silico methods include data mining, quantitative structure-activity relationships, pharmacophores, molecular modelling, machine learning, network and data analysis tools. In silico approaches have the potential to explore, identify, and repurpose the natural compounds from traditional systems for addressing unmet medical needs thereby promoting multi-target drug discovery. The CoE and Bioinformatics Center, SPPU jointly organized a workshop on ‘In-silico pharmacological approaches in AYUSH research’ on 8th – 10th July 2019. A total of 36 participants (faculty and students) working in the area of AYUSH research and pharmaceutical sciences attended the workshop. The participants were selected based on statement of purpose and relevance of their projects. The workshop intended to facilitate capacity building of AYUSH researchers in in-silico techniques particularly network pharmacology and molecular docking. Workshop had focused sessions on Bioinformatics and Systems Biology, Network Pharmacology, Molecular Docking, Drug Repurposing. The sessions included hands on activities, case studies, panel discussion, software training and interactions with experts.

  • Yoga for Youth – IYD 2020
    In order to commemorate the International Yoga Day 2020 and to address the surge in Yoga practice, the Ramkumar Rathi Patanjali Yoga Chair, Board of Sports and Physical Education and Centre for Complementary and Integrative Health, Interdisciplinary School of Health Science of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) organized a webinar series on ‘Yoga for Youth’ from 22nd-24th June 2020.

    The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all the walks of life. The pandemic has instilled a desire for attaining health and wellness globally. Yoga has time again been proved to be helpful in attaining physical and psychological health, which is the need of the hour. Foundations and practices of Yoga may be instrumental in bringing resurgence and help rebuilding the society. Considering these strengths of Yoga and the need of the hour, the webinar series on ‘Yoga for Youth’ was planned.

    The series aimed at introducing various dimensions of Yoga especially for the students who are aspiring for academic excellence and future career. The topics and interaction with experts addressed the potentials of Yoga in development of personality, optimism, energy, and creativity. Prof H R Nagendra, an extremely renowned yoga expert, was the Chief Guest of the series. The series had talks by renowned speakers like Dr Manmath Gharote, Dr Raghavendra Rao, Dr Samprasad Vinod and Shri Ramkumar Rathi. Apart from informative talks, the webinar had practical sessions by Dr Sunanda Rathi, Dr Pallavi Kavhane and Dr Kiran Hendre.
