Academics Courses

The School of Health Sciences offers two fulltime post-graduate courses (MPH and MSc Health Sciences) and two PhD courses (PhD in Health Sciences and PhD Public Health).

Master of Public Health:

The MPH programme trains students for a career in public health management, research and intervention. Students with the MPH degree are equipped with knowledge and skills to function as public health practitioners working with communities, as public health administrators in government, in NGOs and developmental organizations or as faculty in public health teaching institutions.

MSc. Health Sciences :

Health Sciences students combine knowledge and skills of public health and epidemiology with laboratory based skills in microbiology, biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology. These students have the training to work as infectious disease epidemiologists, molecular epidemiologists as well as in pharmaceutical research institutions conducting clinical trials. The MSc Health Sciences programme has a strong bio-medical focus.
The courses are highly interdisciplinary and involve a population based approach to studying health and disease. Epidemiology and biostatistics courses are intensive and involve computer based training with primary data collected from urban and rural community settings, public sector health facilities, and hospitals. Students of Health Sciences have compulsory training in laboratory methods in health sciences which include basic to advanced techniques from the fields of biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, genetics and molecular biology .

Practical training

The School provides equal emphasis on theoretical and practical training during the post-graduate training programme. The School has a field practice area encompassing the villages under the Khadkala primary health centre. Other practical training opportunities include a fully fledged laboratory where students can train in biochemistry, microbiology and molecular biology. The School has a nutrition laboratory for providing training in nutritional methods, and intensive practical training in biostatistics and data management computer laboratory for computer based training work. A compulsory public health internship programme and a year long dissertation provide additional practical training.

Student placements

Students graduating from this School are well placed in rewarding careers in a variety of health organizations in India and abroad. These include international agencies such as the World Health Organization, UNICEF, NITI Ayog, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and in Maharashtra state health services, Maharashtra’s Nutrition Mission, International development agencies. Several students are working as research/PhD fellows at national research institutes such as International Institute of Population Studies, National Institute of Virology, National AIDS Research Institute, and at University departments in India and in the US and Europe. Students are also placed in leadership positions in well known health NGOs. Some students are in pharma research companies.
