The department is a Research Centre and as such admits students to the Ph. D. Programme as per the University rules and as per the availability of research student vacancies.

All faculty members of the Department contribute to historical research by writing books, research papers and presenting their own research in various academic gatherings at the national and international level. They write primarily in Marathi, English and Hindi.

The Department has hosted a number scholars from Europe, Japan and USA as a part of various fellowships and research initiatives.

The department organises research training initiatives for students, teachers and the larger community throughout the year.

इतिहास विभाग हे विद्यापीठाचे इतिहास विषयक संशोधनाचे केंद्र आहे. येथील आजी माजी प्राध्यापकांनी आपापल्या अभ्यासविषयात ऐतिहासिक संशोधन करून ते ग्रंथरूपात आणि संशोधनपर निबंधांच्या रूपाने प्रकाशित केले आहे. प्राध्यापक आपले संशोधन राष्ट्रीय आणि आंतरराष्ट्रीय पातळीवर सादर करतात. त्यांचे संशोधनात्मक लिखाण हे प्रामुख्याने मराठी, इंग्रजी आणि हिंदी भाषेत आहे. युरोप, जपान आणि अमेरिकेतील अनेक संशोधक इतिहास विभागासोबत संशोधनकार्य करतात.

पीएच. डी. विद्यावाचस्पती या पदवीसाठीच्या संशोधनासाठीचे मार्गदर्शनही इतिहास विभागात विद्यापीठ नियमानुसार आणि विद्यार्थ्यांसाठी मार्गदर्शकांकडे असणाऱ्या रिक्त जागांनुसार केले जाते.

याखेरीज विद्यार्थ्यांसाठी, प्राध्यापकांसाठी आणि खुल्या स्वरूपातदेखील इतिहासविषयक मार्गदर्शन देण्यासाठी इतिहास विभागात वर्षभर अनेकविध ऐतिहासिक संशोधनपर कार्यक्रम आयोजित केले जातात.
