Established in 1987, the Bioinformatics Centre at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is among India's pioneering institutions dedicated to bioinformatics education and research. The Centre has played a significant role in shaping the discipline in the country, including awarding one of the earliest Ph.D. degrees in Bioinformatics. It has been recognized as a Centre of Excellence by both the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
The Centre launched its M.Sc. Bioinformatics programme in 2002, offering a curriculum that combines strong theoretical foundations with extensive hands-on computational training. Admissions to the programme are currently conducted through the DBT Graduate Aptitude Test–Biotechnology (GAT-B). Established under the visionary leadership of Professor A. S. Kolaskar, the Centre continues to contribute significantly to advancements in bioinformatics education, research, and innovation.
