The field of communication studies is difficult to define as an academic discipline in India. This is due, in part, to the fact that communication studies in an inter discipline that has achieved disciplinary status over the past thirty years all over the world.
The Department of Communication Studies at University of Pune has been in existence since 1990. It was one of the first universities in India to recognize that academic course in Communication which is more than mass communication in general and journalism in particular.
The single most important aspect that makes this course stands apart from other communication course in the country is the close linkage between the technical and academic areas of its work thus facilitating a synergy between the Media Research, & Video Production.
The department offers Video production, Media Research specialization and  Ph. D Programme.
Video Production: This specialization of communication studies focuses intensive hands on training in video production including direction, research, editing, camera exercise and more related with video production. Students make their own short films.
Media Research: This particular specialization is the study of the critical skills of research method. Students pursue research in many fields including media, audiences, content analysis, and advertisements.

Ph.D in Communication Studies: Department offers doctoral programme in Communication Studies. Admission to this programme is centeralized.
