The
Department of Marathi was established in 1950
in consonance with the aims & objectives of the establishment of the
University of Pune. It has a heritage of great scholars as the heads of the
department. Prof. S. G. Tulpule, a scholar of medieval Marathi Language &
Literature, was the first Head of the Department. He laid down the working
system of the department on sound footing. Though he did not have many
faculty members to help him, he did manage the multifarious activities of
the department with the help of visiting faculty. Prof. R. S. Joag, writer
and critic of high repute, Dr. P. G. Sahasrabuddhe, writer, social thinker
and dedicated teacher of his discipline, Dr. V. B. Pathak, Dr. V. V.
Patwardhan, Dr. R. S. Walimbe, Dr. V. R. Karandikar, Dr. Anuradha Potdar all
stalwarts and Heads of Departments of Marathi from various colleges
belonging to the glorious tradition of education in the city of Pune used to
teach M.A. students. Dr. R. S. Walimbe took the charge as a successor of Dr.
Tulpule. He made all the efforts to develop the department further. The
department took a proper shape in a well expanded manner in the regime of
Dr. M. S. Kanade. He had an opportunity to work for a period of a decade or
so. He had more number of permanent colleagues & he could accelerate the
M.Phil. and Ph.D. programme. Dr. S. R. Chunekar and Dr. Kalyan Kale followed
in his footsteps and increased the sphere of co-curricular activities.
Dr. Nagnath Kottapalle, who joined the department as Professor and Head gave
the leadership with enthusiasm and zeal. He was a creative writer and critic
of modern Marathi literature. He himself was associated with a number of
literary activities. With his contacts all over Maharashtra many scholars
and persons of eminence in the field of Marathi helped the department to
reach great heights. He organized many seminars, workshops and
lecture-series. He did encourage his colleagues and students to participate
in research activities. He did believe in social commitments and helped a
large section of the student community and teachers from affiliated colleges
in their all-round growth. Dr. Kottapalle left the department and joined Dr.
Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University as the Vice-Chancellor.
