2. M. Phil
Duration :
1 Year for completing the course, 2 years for the submission of the
dissertation.
Eligibility: M.A. with Marathi Literature.
Admission Procedure:
20 student are admitted through the departmental entrance examination and
interviews. Admissions are given according to the government rules.
Fees :
Tuition Fee - Rs. 2400/- per year.

In order to train students
for their further research, the department runs the M. Phil. Course
comprising of training in advances in the field and writing of a small
dissertation. This course is run within the overall framework of the Rules
and Regulations for M. Phil. decided by the University from time to time.
The Department started the M. Phil course since 1985.
M.Phil. Admissions :
For the selection of
M.Phil students there is an Entrance Test and a Personal Interview, which is
conducted by the Department in the month of July after the declaration of
M.A. results. The provision for reservation for M.Phil.is similar to M.A.
(mentioned above).
First semester of the M. Phil. course consists of three courses and a
written examination:
Course I Research Methods
Course II Literature & Other Social Sciences
Course III 19th Century Marathi Literature/ Loksahitya
After a candidate has passed in these three courses and completed the
assignments, s/he is assigned to a supervisor and after that the candidate,
in consultation with the supervisor chooses a topic of research. Based on
this topic, the candidate submits a dissertation. This is evaluated by an
external examiner and an internal examiner appointed by the Department. The
candidate has to give a seminar at the time of submission of the
dissertation and after the examiners’ report is received. Final grade is
determined on the basis of the combined performance at both these seminars
and the examiners’ report on the dissertation.
3. Ph. D
The department
runs two research degrees—M. Phil. and Ph.D. in Marathi. Following faculty
members of the department are recognized by the University as Research
Supervisor
The registration for Ph.D. is open throughout the year, provided that there
is an approval from the supervisor. The department undertakes the admission
process only after the candidate with the signature of the supervisor
submits a synopsis along with the provisional admission fee.
Admissions and conduct of the Ph. D. research are governed by University
Rules.
The department
has complete autonomy as far as academic programmes are concerned.
Since the year 2003-2004 the semester system has been introduced. The course
contents are revised/ modified every three years so that all recent treads
in the field of Marathi literature are included in the curriculum. While
framing the courses the impact of globalization and liberalization has been
thoroughly considered. Care is always taken to bring out the excellence from
the students. As a result of all the efforts on the part of the department
the success rate of students not only at the M.A. examination but also the
Net/Set examination is noteworthy and it may be mentioned here that during
the last six – seven years the dropout rate has gone down considerably. The
department provides the students with the facilities of computers and the
departmental library. The department organizes a variety of programmes that
enable students to meet eminent personalities in the field of Marathi
literature. All efforts are being made by the department to enhance the
learning resources. Apart from delivering lectures in the class, faculty
members encourage the students to participate in group discussions, in
attending seminars/conferences/workshops, to take part in various
competitions, to engage themselves in various literary activities and self
study. Students are enlightened by the expert speakers whose lecture series
are organized by the department. Students are also encouraging them to meet
their teachers frequently for consultation regarding a variety of problems.
With a view to enhance the quality of research, a couple of workshops have
been organized by the department. Many faculty members of affiliated
colleges and research students of the department derived benefit from the
same. The teachers are always busy in academic activities in addition to
regular teaching and research. A couple of teachers are members of various
committees of different universities/bodies concerning the course framing
and research activities of a number of Universities. The department believes
in co-operation rather than competition with the departments of other
Universities. The students of the department are continuously assessed
during the semester. They are expected to participates in the seminars and
workshops conducted by the department. They are also expected to appear for
different kinds of tests during the semester. The overall performance of the
student is taken into account at the time of declaring results.
The students of the department receive guidance for the preparation of
SET/NET examinations. Guidance is also
provided to the students who appear at the MPSC/UPSC
examinations. The students of the department and the members of the faculty
are honored for the significant achievements. The department of Marathi has
number of plans for the next five years. The department proposes to have a
separate building consisting of well equipped seminar hall, language
laboratory, a computer room, four big classrooms etc. The department dreams
to have a large collection of old manuscripts and separate library of folk
literature.
The Department allows participation of all the concerned in the framing and
implementing of its syllabus (courses) through giving opportunity to all the
concerned to make suggestions, additions etc. There is a considerable amount
of academic flexibility that the department has been adopting. The students
who are differently abled are also paid attention to as per requirement.
Personal and informal contact is established with the students and feedback
on various activities of the department is sought from them. Continuous
updating of syllabus is done by the department to make its teaching up to
date and relevant to the times. Informal attempts are made to ensure the
quality of the students. The admission process of the department is
transparent and merit-based. The quality of the teachers and updating of
their knowledge are ensured by encouraging them to undertake and complete
research projects. Formal as well as informal guidance / consultancy
is provided to M. A., M. Phil. and Ph.D. students.
A number of the faculty of the department visit various institutions for
delivering lectures and thereby add to extension activities of the
department. The Department collaborates with other literary, cultural and
social bodies for the purpose of organizing academic, literary, intellectual
events. There is considerable amount of infrastructure in the department and
it is properly maintained. Faculty and students in the department represent
a number of sections of Indian / Maharashtrian
society. The department has established a good rapport with all the
stakeholders. All faculty of the department evaluate their performance
through annual self assessment reports. These reports show a steady and
satisfactory growth in the quality of teaching and in the quality and
quantity of research and publications of the faculty. The faculty present
their research papers in various academic gatherings such as seminars,
conferences etc.
