Recently universities are seeing diverse student profile in their campuses, both in India and USA.In India students from marginalized social groups of caste, community, tribe, gender, class and region are newly entering into universities for the post graduate degree in a big way. Similarly in US universities also, a demographic shift can be seen due to increasing numbers of first generation students from low income, immigrant and minority racial/ethnic groups in colleges and universities. This project takes as its point of departure the changing demographics in college and university classrooms and seeks to identify relevant educational and institutional practices and policies that are responsive to newly entering student populations from disadvantaged groups, in ways that advance the mission of higher learning and academic excellence.
The goal of the project is to better align principles of equality and excellence in higher education, and to generate new data, and educational approaches that highlight viable and effective interventions on how social diversity contributes to a positive academic climate, and enriches university life.
Main component of the project are data collection and developing new survey tools, to study the needs of students, and status of diversity and equity on campus. Survey results will be published in a report for wider campus dialogue.
