Outreach Programme for inculcation of "Scientific Attitude" through science
education
CPHSc. would not view itself as promoting an esoteric approach. It would engage
in research and development of materials in promoting and inculcating in
students a "Scientific Temper and Attitude", (i.e., well-defined abilities and
values such as the spirit of inquiry, creativity, objectivity, the courage to
question, and an aesthetic sensibility), a goal espoused by National Policy on
Education.
CPHSc. would undertake the task of development of these materials in
collaboration with the science teachers in the neighboring schools and colleges
in order to improve the chances of their acceptance. This is based on the firm
belief that scientific temper cannot be inculcated by presenting science
dogmatically and as a finished product, to be learnt by rote. We must present
science as a process. This means in turn that teachers and writers of textbooks
of science have to be made aware of the developing character of science, i.e.
continual examination and revision, with a view to its utilization in science
education, a perspective Philosophy and History of Science essentially provides.
The First workshop of the Outreach program took place on 27th August 2005. Prof.
