Microbiology Curriculum
M.Sc. Microbiology is
a full time credit based course comprising of two years (Four Semesters).
Department offers instructions in wide areas of Microbiology such as Microbial
metabolism, Physiology, Genetics, Molecular biology, Medical Microbiology,
Immunology, Applied and Environmental Microbiology; which is effectively
facilitated by well balanced credit based curriculum consisting of different theory papers and practical
courses.
For M.Sc. in Microbiology a
student should take admission in the Microbiology Department and complete at
least 75% credits identified in the syllabus structure of Microbiology. If
students so desires, remaining 25% credits can be chosen from credits offered
by other Departments in Pune University with credit structure.
A full Master’s degree course in Microbiology is of 80 credits, where one credit course of theory is of one clock hour per week,
running for 15 weeks and one credit for practical course consists of 15 clock hours of laboratory exercises.
Broad
based curriculum of department makes it possible to meet the requirement of
various national / international research institutes and industries. Overall,
our M.Sc. curriculum is one of the best in the country.

Dissertation
The dissertation is a part of
fourth semester
in lieu of practical courses and is
equivalent to 8 credits. The students are assigned to the Department faculty for
dissertation. The
format for dissertations is similar to the thesis style incorporating
introduction, materials & methods, results, discussion and bibliography.
The dissertation is submitted in a type written and bound form and a copy of
each dissertation is submitted to the Department for permanent record.
Evaluation
One credit, two credit and three credit courses are evaluated for 25, 50 and 75 marks respectively. A continuous internal evaluation is been carried out for all these three types of courses.
Results
at the end of the semester are declared using a grade point system. The formula
for GPA is based on weighted average. The final GPA is calculated after student
passes courses equivalent to minimum 80 credit hours.
A
seven point grade system (guided by the Government of Maharashtra Resolution
No. UGC-1298/[4619]/UNI. 4 dt December 11, 1999 and the University regulations)
is followed.
Academic Year
The academic year is divided into two semesters:
The first and third semesters commence in July first or second week and
generally ends in third week of December.
Second
and fourth semesters begin in first week of January and ends in third week of
May. M.Sc. students are admitted only at the beginning of the first semester.
Fees
Tuition, Laboratory, and other fees will be as per the prevailing rules
of the University of Pune. Fees are payable before commencement of the course.
