What is the Scope of M Sc Geology?

M Sc Geology is the general branch compared to M Sc/M Tech in Petroleum Geology and Mining Geology which are specialized and restricted to their stream. M Sc Geology on the other hand enables the student to qualify for all the job resources including petroleum, mining, hydrogeology, environment, geotechnical services apart from the government jobs in geology (Geological Survey of India through UPSC, ONGC, IBM, AMD, CIL etc.. and other state departments). This is because the M Sc Geology qualifies the classical as well as applied topics like mineralogy, crystallography, petrology (igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary), geophysics, remote sensing, geochemistry, paleontology, Quaternary geology, stratigraphy, structural geology, geochronology, geomorphology, engineering geology, hydrogeology, surface-water hydrology, geodynamics and plate tectonics, economic geology, petroleum geology, planetary geology, and oceanography.

What are geologists and what do they do?

Geologists study the Earth's physical, chemical and biological processes, composition and interaction in a systematic spatio-temporal manner. They provide information to society for use in solving problems and establishing policies for resource management, environmental protection, public health, safety, and welfare.

A geologist studies earth processes such as earthquakes, landslides, floods, and volcanic eruptions to survey land and draw up safe building plans. When geologists investigate earth materials, not only do they investigate metals and minerals, but they also look into oil, natural gas, water and methods to extract these. Overall, geology is concerned with the changes of the earth over time, such as climate change and land formation.

What can I do after M.Sc. Geology degree?

A M Sc Geology graduate is eligible for several qualifying examinations including CSIR UGC NET, GATE, UPSC Geologists examination, Several M Tech and PG programs and overseas fellowships.

A post graduate in geology is proficient in identification of rocks and minerals, preparing and reading the geological maps, understanding the origin and ages of the rocks. He is aware of undertaking field and laboratory investigations combined with teamwork, documentation and preparation reports. As a result he can become a good asset to mining, geotechnical and NGO jobs. With little experience he can start his own consultancy services like groundwater (/resistivity) survey, rain water harvesting, landscaping, geotechnical survey and retrofitting, EIA, small scale mining, geotextile applications, soil investigations and remediations, excavations, mapping and total station survey, GIS-remote sensing work etc.
