Master's Programs

	Master of Arts / Master of Science (M.A. / M.Sc.)- Mathematics - 2 Years
	Program

Master of Science (M.Sc. Tech.)- Instrustrial Mathematics with Computer
	Applications - 3 Years Program

	The two-year M.A./M.Sc.
(Mathematics) degree program consists of four semesters (terms) with each
semester lasting for six months. Beginning August 2002, the Department is
implementing the Credit System of evaluation of students. It is required
that the student earn 100 credits to acquire his/her Master's degree. The
course contents are at presnt under revision to meet the needs of the Credit
	System.

	Post-Graduate Programs

	Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.)

	Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

	Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.)

	The M.Phil degree program is a post-M.A./M.Sc.
program which requires that the student pass in 3 courses and submit a
dissertation. The dissertation could contain original results, though
typically it is an exposition of some mathematical results already present
in the literature. Having passed in the courses and submitted his/her
dissertation, the student has to face a viva to defend the dissertation. The
over-all grade awarded to the student depends on his/her performance in the
courses and the viva as well as on the quality of the dissertation. Every
year the department conducts interviews, normally in August, to admit
students to the M.Phil. program. Typically, the student completes the
M.Phil. program in less than 3 years since the time of his/her being
admitted to the program. The M.Phil. program is highly suitable for those
college teachers who are looking to improve their qualifications without
	getting into the Ph.D. program.

	Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

	The Ph.D. degree program is a post-M.A./M.Sc.
program which requires that the student submit a mathematical thesis
containing original results. Having submitted his/her thesis, the student
has to face a viva to defend the thesis. The admission of the student to the
Ph.D. program is approved by a committee appointed by the University of
Pune. The application form must include the name of the Research Guide. This
involves seeking a prior approval of the Research Guide by the student. The
admission to the Ph.D. program can be sought at any time of the year.
Normally, the student takes at least 4 years to obtain his/her Ph.D. degree
since the time of his/her being admitted to the program. While it is not
uncommon for a student to complete the M.Phil. program before registering as
a Ph.D. student, the M.Phil. degree is not a prerequisite for being admitted
	to the Ph.D. program.
