HISTORICAL
BACKGROUND
The UGC
considered
the proposal
submitted
by Savitribai
Phule Pune
University
for the
establishment
of the National
Centre of
International
Security
and Defence
Analysis
(NISDA).
The Commission,
realizing
the importance
and the
merit of
the proposal
endorsed
the Savitribai
Phule Pune
University
(SPPU) as
the venue
for the
establishment
of such
a centre.
This proposal
was placed
under the
programme
“New Schemes
during the
9th Plan.”
The UGC
Expert Committee
visited
the Savitribai
Phule Pune
University
on 30-31
October
2003 to
ascertain
the viability
of the project
submitted
and then
gave their
recommendations
to the Commission
for implementation.
NISDA became
operational
at the Savitribai
Phule Pune
University
from 1 March
2005. The
UGC granted
a sum of
Rupees Five
Crores as
initial
Seed Money
to establish
the NISDA.
Simultaneously
a Chair
Professorship
in Air Power
Studies
was also
established
in NISDA.
On 1 October
2008, the
Savitribai
Phule Pune
University,
recognizing
the contribution
of Shri.
Yashwantrao
Chavan to
India’s
foreign
and security
policy,
decided
to rename
the centre
as Yashwantrao
Chavan National
Centre of
International
Security
and Defence
Analysis
(YCNISDA)
Savitribai
Phule Pune
University.
