Founded in1990 the Department of Media & Communication Studies (DMCS) at the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is located in the heart of the scenic & historic cultural capital of Maharashtra, Pune City. It is one of the Premier Universities in India which launched an academic course in Communication Studies.

The field of Communication Studies is difficult to define as an academic discipline in India. This is due, in part, to the fact that Communication Studies is an interdisciplinary course which has achieved academic disciplinary status over the past 30 years across the world.

The single most important aspect that makes this course stand apart from another Communication courses in the country is the close linkage between the technical & academic areas of its work thus facilitating a synergy between Media Research & Video Production.

The Department offers M.Sc., M. Phil. & Ph. D. Courses specializing in Media Research (MR) & Video Production (VP)

The students after completing their course, catered to the Film, Television, Advertising, Market Research, Radio, Print & Electronic Media, Publication, Online Channels, Social Media, etc. industries on various diverse capacities.
