IBB
conducts the integrated postgraduate course leading to the degree of
“M. Sc. Biotechnology” at the end of five Years or “M. Tech.
Biotechnology” at the end of Six Years.

It is
an unique course and the only of its kind, which provides a Masters’
level degree through a rigorous, integrated training of five/six
years after the 10+2 level education.

The
experts in various relevant fields have designed the curriculum of
the course meticulously and it is updated regularly. Biotechnology
is a highly multidisciplinary area of Science. The main objective of
the curriculum design is to provide balanced and comprehensive
knowledge of the basic as well as applied sciences related to
Biotechnology that would enhance the basic aptitude of each student
and prepare them to take up the challenges in the varied and
multi-faceted applications of Biotechnology.

The
credit system pattern has been implemented for the course. The
guidelines for credit system as approved by the University of Pune
are followed.

The
semester system is followed in the course where the students take
about 25 credits per semester. Completion of 250 credits in the form
of various papers, project and training in industry / academic
institutions make the students eligible for the M. Sc. degree.

The
students are offered the option to continue for 6th year, which
would make them eligible for M. Tech (Biotechnology) degree. The
curriculum for this year would include significant industry /
research project component in addition to related courses.

A
total of 30 students are inducted per batch every year.

The
teaching program of the course is conducted on the campus of the
University of Pune.

The
assessment of the students is done by both, continuous assessment
during the semester and Semester End Examination for each paper.
Each component has an equal weightage in the final grade (50% each).
The paper setting, conduct of examination and assessments are
carried out at IBB.

In
the five years of teaching, both classroom and extensive laboratory
training in various aspects of Biotechnology and related areas such
as Basic Biology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics,
Physics, Biochemistry, Organic chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics,
Computer Science, Genomics, Proteomics, Bioinformatics, Immunology,
Instrumentation etc. is imparted. In the final year of the program
direct interactions with relevant industries through research
projects / training constitute a major component.
