Keynote Address

Mr. Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, is an independent journalist and an educator. He started his career as a journalist in June 1977 and has been employed with various media organizations including companies bringing out publications. His work experience, spanning more than 35 years, cuts across different media: print, radio, television and documentary cinema. He is a writer, speaker, anchor, interviewer, teacher and commentator in three languages: English, Bengali and Hindi. His main areas of interest are the working of the political economy and the media in India and the world, on which he has authored/co-authored books and directed/produced documentary films. He served as a member of the Press Council of India nominated by the University Grants Commission between January 2008 and January 2011.

Plenary Address

Professor Brian Patrick O'Donoghue, an Associate Professor at University of Alaska Fairbanks, US, is currently a Fulbright-Nehru Scholar in India at Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication, Pune. His research in India centers on "Digital Tsunami" which is a non-fiction book about evolving reporting technologies. Besides that he is a distinguished journalist with more than 30 years experience in print, non-fiction books, online reporting and some TV work. He has authored several books, booklets and articles. He has been honored several renowned awards such as 2010 & 2009 Public Service Award (Alaska Press Club), 2010 Citation (honoring UAF Embed Team), 2009 Best Multimedia Presentation (Alaska Press Club, 2004 Academic Freedom Award (ACC Federation of Teachers) besides many other journalism awards since 1986.

Valedictory Address

Professor Dr. Kiran Prasad is Professor and Head, Department of Communication and Journalism, Sri Padmavati Mahila University, Tirupati, India. She was Commonwealth Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for International Communication Research, Institute of Communication Studies, University of Leeds, UK and Canadian Studies Research Fellow at the School of Journalism and Communication, Carleton University, Canada. She is the youngest ever recipient of the ‘State Best Teacher Award’ from the Government of Andhra Pradesh, India and recipient of several national awards for academic excellence. She has researched extensively in India, Bangladesh, Singapore, Malaysia, Middle East, USA, Canada and the UK on the interrelations between communication and development studies. She has published 20 books and over 100 research papers. Her recent books include Media Law in India (Kluwer Law International, 2011), Communication for Development: Reinventing Theory and Action (2009), e-Journalism: New Media and News Media (2009), Media Law and Ethics: Readings in Communication Regulations (2008) and HIV and AIDS: Vulnerability of Women in Asia and Africa (2008).
